Port Askaig 8 Year Old is a classic Islay single malt Scotch whisky renowned for its vibrant, coastal character and approachable peat smoke. Widely understood to be sourced from the Caol Ila distillery, it is bottled at 45.8% ABV, non-chill filtered, and naturally coloured. The whisky is aged primarily in American oak ex-bourbon casks, with a portion finished in toasted oak and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks to add depth and sweetness.
Nose (Appearance & Aroma): The whisky pours a pale, straw-gold colour. The aroma opens immediately with soft peat smoke, charcoal, and wood ash, balanced by fresh maritime notes of salty sea spray and ozone. Beneath the smoke lies a bright layer of lemon zest, green apples, and sweet malted barley.
Palate (Taste & Texture): It has a surprisingly oily and creamy mouthfeel. The flavour strikes a beautiful balance between sweet and savoury. Initial notes of heather honey, vanilla fudge, and salted caramel are quickly enveloped by warming driftwood smoke, herbal liquorice, and a hint of medicinal peat.
Finish: Medium to long. The sweetness fades into a dry, warming finish dominated by lingering campfire smoke, cracked black pepper, and a briny, maritime tang.
